OSTP Workshop on Ethical Considerations in Youth Online Safety Research

Dr. Pamela Wisniewski, an expert in human-computer interaction and youth online safety, participated in a workshop hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) on October 15, 2024. The event, “Ethical Considerations when Studying Youth Online,” brought together leading academics, industry experts, and government representatives to explore the challenges and ethical dilemmas researchers face when studying youth online behavior and mental health using pervasive data.

Dr. Wisniewski, a faculty member at Vanderbilt University’s School of Engineering, contributed her expertise on balancing privacy, data collection, and safeguarding youth in digital environments. The workshop included interactive discussions on the ethical frameworks required for navigating complex issues such as privacy safeguards, the evolving nature of data methodologies, and the critical responsibilities associated with child protection and mandated reporting.

This workshop highlights Dr. Wisniewski’s continued leadership in the field, emphasizing the national priority to protect youth in digital spaces.
