STIR Lab attends GHC 2020

Congratulations to STIR Lab members Heidi Hartikainen, Afsaneh Razi, Ashwaq Alsoubai, and Zainab Agha on attending this year’s Virtual Grace Hopper Celebration. Both Zainab Agha and Afsaneh Razi attended as recipients of a Grace Hopper Scholarship, while Ashwaq Alsoubai and Heidi Hartikainen presented posters, which are detailed below:

Heidi’s poster, “Online Peer Support for Adolescent Online Sexual Risk” analyzes social media trace data from a peer support platform to examine what online sexual experiences with people they know adolescents seek support for, and what kind of peer support they receive to deal with these experiences.

Ashwaq’s poster, “ALBERT-CNN: Fake News Detection using Deep Learning Models” sheds light on the role of contextual representation of words that are fed to the deep learning network. A proposed model cooperates the pre-trained language model ALBERT for feature extraction with CNN as the fake news classifier.

We hope all our attendees enjoyed the GHC workshops and virtual sessions, and wish them luck as they continue their future work!
