Dr. Pamela Wisniewski was featured in MIT Technology Review’s article, “Child-monitoring apps might need a reboot,” which examines how parental-monitoring technologies can affect young people’s safety, privacy, autonomy, and trust.
The article highlights Wisniewski’s more than decade-long research on adolescent online safety and her argument that surveillance alone is not the answer. As she explains, many monitoring tools can undermine parent-teen trust while remaining relatively easy for teens to circumvent.
Instead, Wisniewski advocates for resilience-based online safety, centered on helping young people develop self-regulation, learn how to cope with online risks, and build trusted support networks. Her research also explores how these principles can be embedded directly into technology while preserving adolescents’ privacy and autonomy.
