Dr. Pamela Wisniewski will deliver a keynote at ACM Multimedia 2026 (ACM MM ’26) titled “Safety by Design: Building a Safer Multimedia World for Young People.”
Drawing on more than a decade of research on adolescent online safety, Wisniewski will discuss how the multimedia community can move beyond simply detecting and mitigating online risks toward designing technologies that promote safety by design.
Her keynote will highlight why online risks cannot always be understood from a single message or modality. Young people’s online experiences emerge through combinations of text, images, video, audio, behavioral signals, social relationships, and broader lived contexts. Using cyber-grooming and online sexual risk as a motivating case, she will discuss the importance of considering these relational and developmental contexts when designing safety technologies.
The talk will also explore how responsible sociotechnical and multimodal AI systems can be context-aware, privacy-preserving, trauma-informed, and supportive of young people’s autonomy and resilience—while engaging youth themselves as partners in designing safer online environments.
Wisniewski joins Elisabeth André, Haizhou Li, and Clarisse Sieckenius de Souza as keynote speakers at ACM Multimedia 2026.
