Dr. Pamela Wisniewski, along with Dr. Liz Sweigart and Aahil Valliani, co-authored a Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) article, “Pause, Reflect, and Redirect: Helping Youth Make Better Digital Choices.”
The article presents the Pause, Reflect, and Redirect (PRR) framework as an alternative to punitive blocking and restriction. Rather than simply preventing young people from accessing risky or off-task content, PRR uses developmentally aligned interventions that encourage youth to pause, reconsider their choices, and receive additional support when necessary.
A five-week middle-school pilot found a 58% reduction in attempts to access off-task or inappropriate sites, while 77% of students never required more than the lowest-level intervention. The approach emphasizes turning online missteps into opportunities for reflection, learning, and resilience-building.
The work reflects a broader approach to youth online safety that balances protection with agency, helping young people develop safer decision-making skills rather than relying solely on surveillance or restriction.
